Fredy Hirsch, a Gay German-Jewish athlete and sports teacher who helped thousands of Jewish children during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in Prague, Theresienstadt concentration camp, and Auschwitz. Late 30s/early 40s.
Never knew his name. Heroes like this belong in every history book. Grateful you posted this.

Why is his sexual preference even included? Its not important compared to the amazing and heroic act he done. Why mention he was gay? Its not the important thing about him. His character, wits, bravery, and brilliance is what helped saved those people.

I wonder how he’d feel about what’s happening in the world today.

Unfortunately he didn’t make it. When he was arrested and sent to Auschwitz, he continued helping the kids of the camp. But when they were sent to the gas chambers, he died – likely killed himself.

Always amazing to see stories of people who suffer themselves take on burdens to lessen the suffering on others. Rest in peace

Just read the book: The Teacher of Auschwitz. Follows his life based on interviews after the war. I’m not an avid reader, but I got through it in a few days because I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend it.
