Is this happening only to me?

    1. They say smoke follows beauty, but I am convinced the wind just has a personal vendetta against me.

    2. OMG same. With ALL smoke. My wife will light an incense in the house and no matter where I’m sitting, fan on or not, the smoke wafts right into my nose. I might as well wear an oxygen mask if I’m at a campfire.

The science behind it is because you create an area of least resistance like a miniature vacuum. Your body is blocking the air pressure so the smoke wants to take the path of least resistance hence in your face

I can walk around the fire 10 times, and the smoke will take that victory lap right along with me

    5. you’re supposed to say “i hate white rabbits” to get the smoke to leave you alone

    6. If you dont want smoke in your face just lick you thomb then point it at the fire works every time

Try not to burn wood that’s wet or unseasoned. Seasoned or dried out wood will produce less smoke. Pick up a log you want to put into a fire and drop it on a hard surface, if it sounds like a “thud” it has too much moisture in it. If the log hits the hard surface with a “plunk” or clatter/rattling sound, it’s dry.

I could be in a vacuum-sealed room with a candle and the smoke would still find a way to enter my soul.

    9. Build a horseshoe shaped wind break made of firewood. It dries out your wood and keeps smoke from blowing in your face.

In Germany they say something to the likes of smoke is always with the stupid („Rauch zieht immer zu den Dummen“).

      Same.

And when I go to a concert or other big event I somehow always end up standing where people want to walk through. I try not to, but it always happens.

Your diet needs to be changed immediately! You’re practically just a stick!

      There is a reason for this;

The column of rising hot air atop the flame pulls fresh cold air in from all directions into the base of the fire. When you sit near the flame your body blocks the fresh air coming from behind you. This in turn creates a low pressure zone in front of you that pulls the column of smoke into your face.

Several solutions include; sitting down to minimise your body’s cross-section, modify the fire pit to have dedicated fresh air holes, have multiple people stand equally spread out around the flame; and many more. Once you understand the aerodynamic principle behind the phenomenon you can often improvise a solution.

I really love your meme. I posted a bastardized version elsewhere and I hope you don’t mind

The heat pulls the cooler air from ground level then radiates out heat while the current moves upwards. The radiated heat warms the air between you and the fire causing the cooler air in the area to be drawn in. You make an obstruction for the cold air so it has to speed up to get around you, this causes an eddy effect in between you and the fire where the colder, more dense smoke can’t escape vertically fast enough so it gets pulled into the eddy that you make.

    16. Actuall photo of you…? Looks like you’re naked dude.. I can see your little thing hanging

    17. might have to do with airflow, the fire pulls air from the bottom but cant where you are standing, therefore its comming towards you.

    18. The fire has wind coming from all directions. And it’s able to escape from all directions.

But when you stand near it, you’re creating a block. No wind will come from that direction. And the wind that comes from ALL OTHER DIRECTIONS will blow something towards you.

It happens to literally everyone, because it’s just simple physics.

As the wind moves (even in a predominate wind coming from one direction, there are thermals and spirals and all kinds of movements), it’s basically able to escape / equalise from every direction over time. Once you stand near the fire, the wind isn’t “pushing back” from that direction, and anything that comes from the other directions will come towards you without an opposing wind to stop it.

Years of sitting around a campfire with watering eyes. You’re welcome.

Either get down low, sit further away, or have something blowing FROM your direction.
