I remember waiting in line for the burning crusade, we had people on laptops playing WOW all night lol.
It was a blast ! Good times

Digital pre ordering killed the vibe. Nothing beats the hype of standing in line at 11:59 PM with everyone.

You’ll have to pry these physical copies of video games out of my cold dead hands. Digital isnt the same and its not good for the consumer long term

My favorite midnight launch was the Xbox 360. There were only 12 of us in line; that’s all the store had available. Someone brought their Xbox and one of the Walmart managers grabbed a display TV to put it up on the layaway counter so we could play split screen multiplayer while we waited. The last person in line was there at 10am, so we sat there playing Halo until midnight. We had a Papa John’s in the store, and Walmart was nice enough to buy some pizzas for us so no one had to leave their spot.

    5. Halo 2 midnight launch: an industrious marketer went around offering samples of a new (or at least new to middle-of-nowhere Midwest USA) drink called Red Bull.

    6. These are still happening at least with consoles, last time I remember was with the Switch 2 Release last year

there’s still a gamestop near me that actually still gets busy which kinda makes me happy..but man I miss the thrill of waiting in line during midnight releases

My son is 13. When he was around 6-ish (give or take a year), Mario Odyssey came out and had a midnight release. I woke him up at 11:45 and we drove to GameStop where we waited in line with a bunch of other geeks while the store employees handed out a bunch of cool little gifts. We came home and stayed up all night long playing that game. I will remember that moment for the rest of my life and I hope he does too.

I remember always getting the new COD when it came out. I still play but not as often. Adulting sucks sometimes lol.

I have fond memories of the original release of Skyrim midnight release. Place was absolutely packed, everyone had at this point gotten a number to be called group by group to come in and get their game. Midnight hits annnnnd computer system crashes. So a group of very impatient gamers starts to talk and ramble a bit until just out of no where one dude yells.

      HEY!!!

I SAW WE TAKE GAMESTOP!! AND PUSH IT SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!

      Crowd of SpongeBob fans: YEEEEAHHH!!

We then collective as a group start trying to push the GameStop much to their amusement.

Ay, midnight release for switch 2 was hype as hell at all the gamestops and Best Buy’s around.

    12. Gettin the halo full helmet one, waiting after hours in our local mall that’s now under an Amazon center. It was so fun. I forget if that was 2 or 3. Had the silver case 2 I dunno. Brain is melting like the snow.

    13. I remember going to the mall to get halo 2 at midnight and the came home and had a sleepover with my friends and played all night drinking code red and eating Doritos lol

Tears of the Kingdom got released at midnight at the gamestop near where I was living at the time and it was still a euphoric experience

I remember when the whole crowd in line cheered when the first guy in line to get his halo 2 copy came out. The smile on his face when he held it up like it was a trophy for everyone was great.

Then I remember the guys that came out for the halo 3 release that had a projector set up against the wall of the mall playing halo 2 until the cops came and shut them down. It was almost midnight by then anyways and the cops waited until the end of the match. Bros.

    16. Man, the last release I went to was Black Ops 2 and I actually met up with a couple guys from my Xbox CoD clan for the first time and we all brought wings and drinks to enjoy while we waited to get in Gamestop… those were the days.

Midnight releases now “uh we only got 10 copies of this mass produced game and we don’t know when we get more”

EBay scalper: I’ll take all 10

    18. Man the difference between the midnight release for Wings of Liberty and Legacy of the Void was sad.

There’s still long lines at GameStop, they now show up around 5AMish to be first in line for Pokemon card releases when the store opens at 10

I play new games on pc, tho maybe I should get a new console for the sake of getting physical copies of new games…..I miss them ;-; (of course I choose a wonderful time to think about this lmao)

I remember getting guitar hero 3, I was the youngest person by like 6 years, so once they grabbed a ps2 copy all the older people pushed me to the front so I could get it first and go home to play.

Thought you were talking about Massage Envy. They don’t do “release” there.

    23. Homeless-catfight on

It’s sad really. I remember dreading those line just waiting back then, but now they are priceless memories

You just had to be there man. Convincing your mom to let you go to the midnight release for the newest game. I remember going to a cod release and they had a whole trailer set up where you could play the game before the release.

    25. I remember I was working at Walmart at the time, I was perhaps 18 at the time working till 1130pm and then just parking my butt right outside for the Xbox one release. Just so happens Walmart at least then gave out 3 20% off coupons for christmas and I used it on this. So I got a Xbox one with Ryse and 20% off. Felt like heaven. Now, I cant be bothered.

    26. Going to one of these for Mass Effect 2 and then seeing what happens in the first 10 minutes of the game… What a night.

Maybe my locality was lane but these were never that fun – just a lot of waiting in a line silently. Midnight movie releases were a lot better – arcades open and people cosplaying/hyped for the movie.

I really do miss those days. Working midnight releases turned out to be just as fun, so much energy, everyone in high spirits… we had pizzas and pop in the break room, and our manager let us just freely snack (as long as we weren’t just ignoring the store, obv) without having to record it as a “break.”
