Music Appreciation Class is perfect for the school’s jocks. “Would you like to listen to some music?” *I’d appreciate that.*

    3. The 42 does make it sound better than the 4 for the piece but your fine playing the 4 if you dont know how to play 42

The midwit is the one who makes music to impress other musicians. The guys on the extremes make music for the average person.

    5. lmao midwits out here dissecting scales while the legends just drop bangers for the vibes fr

Can confirm. Last IQ test I took said my score was 163, however arbitrary that number is, and I just like to vibe. If it supplements my mood, then it may flow freely into my ears.

Not even Music Theory… **Art History & Theory** in general. If it looks interesting I’ll be interested in what’s behind it.

But if it’s just a white canvas with a red light through it, I don’t care if it’s representing the struggle of the oppressed against their bourgoise masters in the 21st century and how that gets clamped down by the advent of modern technology as a way of dumbing down and distracting the populace while the ultra rich siphon off yet another sovereign nation’s resources just to line their pockets with their 47th yacht. It’s just a white canvas with a red line through it, and I refuse to believe it sold at auction for over $20mil fuck off.

      Learning drawing too.

The middle point is where you learn things like perspective and the like. Stuff that you can’t really learn just by doing.

The far right point is realizing that while theory is important, drawing for the sake of it is the only way to improve.

    9. I studied music theory for a while and I totally agree. There are a billion tricks to help make composition easier but you definitely don’t need to understand them to write good music, nor do the listeners need to understand them to enjoy it.

bet some trap musician said “it sounds good” and release absolute dogshit

If you listen to the peak nerd while maintaining what’s good about the song, you have envelope pushing music

I think this is a little misplaced. A lot of legendary musicians old and new have strong music theory backgrounds. Yeah it has to sound good, but if they sit down with other musicians and talk about a piece, they’ll sound like the midwit trying to describe *why* it sounds good. “Woah! I like what you did there with the little phrygian riff, that flat 2 makes it pop” or something. They just don’t try to sell music theory as sexy to the masses. Music theory is a cool and useful tool. Not always necessary, but neat, and used by many of your favorite musicians (or their writers) who make great sounding music.

    13. Mixolidian, Klezmer scales and shit. Pentatonic arpeggios, all the goot stuff

    14. Eh while its true that you can produce nice music without theory, theory is also just useful as well.

It’s been a recent trend where people insist that music theory is not useful or elitist gatekeeping, but it is simply a tool at the end of the day. Understanding why something is the way it is is useful for like every skill, even if not strictly necessary

    15. As someone who’s mother is a professional violist and HATED her music theory classes, this pain gets passed on down to me every day
