There’s a center stone/slug of irregular shape. Or is it some sort of metallic (iron?) loop for fixing a handle to the back?
The whole shield has amazing craftsmanship so the irregular center stands out even more.

zhou turquoise art always reminds me of central american work with turquoise and jade. I wonder if the cleavage characteristics of the medium sorta enforce certain design patterns, and then motifs develop from there.

Turquoise will change color and darken over time in jewelry, mostly due to oils from the skin. The bright blue turquoise in this is what all of the green likely looked like when it was made.
