My oversimplification would be that the US has never fought a war directly for oil but it has been a contributing factor for many of the wars that it has been involved in but never the main cause.
The closest might have been the Gulf War with Kuwait being an oil rich nation that made it that Saddam’s Iraq would attack Kuwait. Due to his obliterated economy and debt from the Iran Iraq war.
Kuwait was an American ally also and I would guarantee that a similar response would have occurred if Kuwait was completely dry of oil.
