      The American dipper (Cinclus mexicanus) is North America’s only truly aquatic songbird, known for diving, swimming, and “walking” along the bottom of fast-flowing mountain streams to forage.

      Also called water ouzels, these gray, chunky birds use their wings to fly underwater, equipped with specialized white eyelids (nictitating membranes) that act as goggles.
