Straight up downgrade

    1. this is the perfect metaphor for how we’re straight-up regressing on energy, like come on, we need to stop playing with coal!

    2. Coal is bad, yes. But you know whats worse? being entirely reliant on another country with yet another essential resource for your infrastructue. See Nordstream for a reference on how well that works out. Or more recently: Fuel prices are already being raised in anticipation for the oil prices skyrocketing because of the Iran bombings.

Hey, where did germany exactly store the nuclear waste?

Hmm. Oh, its rotting in some forests overground, right, because the previous saltmines started leaking.

/yall, coal is shit. i know. nuclear is shit too, though.

    4. I don’t know what this nuclear energy shit posting is lately, but Germany produces ca. 60% of its energy from renewable sources, while the share of fossil fuels is declining. France only produces 30% from renewables.
While nuclear energy may be better than fossil fuels (which btw no opponent of nuclear energy is defending), but it is not a safe and sustainable long term solution.

    5. Just as a quick history lesson.

The german populace was quite vocal about shutting down those reactors, and the politicians at the time wanted the young voters so they complied. (That and lobbying obv).

Problem is, it was mainly the fossil fuel companies that were spreading misinformation against Nuclear power and fear. Even years later when all of this has come out, basically none of the parties want to revert those changes and bring back nuclear power.

    6. I agree that shutting down the nuclear powerplants wasn’t a great decision, but the energy generation capacity of coal went from 18.7 GW in 2022 to 15.4 GW in 2025.
Calling that “reverting to coal is frankly disingenuous.

    7. SeidlaSiggi777 on

fun fact: German coal is at an all time low. People just love the concept of nuclear without seeing the full picture that nuclear will only be relevant for countries with nuclear weapons and a niche product everywhere else.

    8. Reverting back to coal? That’s BS.

Coal is getting phased out and renewables are rapidly expanding here in Germany. Nuclear was almost irrelevant when it shut down and it only caused a minor uptick for coal for like half a year. Coal mining is also ending within the next decade. Stone coal mining has already ended in 2017 and the remaining brown coal pits were downsized.

I don’t get why reddit has so many nuclear advocates when it is a technology that cannot compete with renewables on any economic scale. Even France has long stopped building new nuclear plants in a sufficient manner and is sinking massive state capital into the system to keep the aging reactors running. And in neighbouring Belgium there are massive concerns about ancient nuclear plants still being used despite repeated small malfunctions.

And Germany is not the only country that has given up on nuclear energy. Italy, Austria, Ireland, Taiwan, Uruguay, Georgia and Denmark all have decided to not use nuclear energy aswell. And Spain and Switzerland have also decided to phase-out their nuclear plants in the next few years.

WTF as German, that meme is just wrong. Coal powerplants are shutting down and coal power is ended by Law. we built massive wind and solar infrastructure and have, sadly, lot of Gas powered power plants.

    10. It’s ok, America is in the middle of a massive downgrade as well in terms of…well everything.

    11. Yes but i’m French and that doesn’t prevent us to pay ridiculously too much for our energy

    12. SlamBargeMarge on

Multi national engineering firms spend Billions on PR for nuclear power. Just putting this out there..

    13. Bullshit, Energy Price going down, you know why, because renewable energy (60% electricity production) opex is free and compare it with nuclear energy, Mr energy expert

    14. EntityBlack1 on

As a nuclear supporter I sadly have to say, search up of how much uranium does France import for the plants and from where and under which conditions.

I’m not saying Germany couldn’t run some nuclear plants, but the plant itself isnt the only obstacle…

    15. CatalyticDragon on

If you think Germany “reverted back to coal” then you’re not even qualified to make memes.

    16. KfP_Clone-Captain on

So we’re just ignoring that in 2025 55-62% in the german energy mix where renewables, while the french still don’t have an end solution for their nuclear waste and probably won’t have until 2035 if at all?

      Well okay then.

    17. Finnish Green Party pulled a notoriously idiotic move and followed the German Green Party in their policy.
They had enough power to negotiate against more nuclear power reactors, so we had to build a huge one instead of multiple tested and tried reactors.

Olkiluoto 3 is top 10 most expensive buildings in the world and faces frequent problems.
We patched things up by becoming the leader in wind power per capita.

    18. Nuclear gets a bad rap, but it’s safe, clean, recyclable, and cheap. It is a huge answer to our future, but people can’t get over it being nuclear.

“AtOmKrAfT nEiN dAnKe!” or how a conutry’s entire youth was socially engineeried into bringing back coal.

It’s obvious corruption, find who pays politicians and shame them over it constantly
