Rick Steves: “Here I am, heading off to Europe the day after high school graduation in 1973 — with a budget of $3 a day, a ten-week Eurail pass in my pocket, and the biggest backpack I could find, jam-packed. I came home with no money, a malnourished body, and an enduring love of Europe.”

Friends borrowed a tour guide he’d written for a trip overseas. They thought they’d hit the top places he mentioned in the book, and ran into him there, at the first place! They bent his ear and enjoyed time with him, before begging off.

They decided to hit an out-of-the-way spot, and dug deeper into the book for suggestions for places and a bite to eat. When they made their way there—Steve was there! At this point, they tried not to catch his eye, but he spotted them. They kinda sheepishly waved, and he said (something like): “Thanks for reading the book…

This photo reminds me of documentary Love actually. The brit wanted to go to the states but the character said the back pack was full of condoms.

Same year I left to go to school in Germany, 3 months of intense immersion another month of more intensity and then university. It was the fast track for sure

He’s a hometown hero where I live. Politically active for all the right reasons, just opened a new community center, always speaking at protests and hosting local events, and a very nice guy in person.

It has been several years, but I remember watching an episode of his show where he went to Iran. He was so appreciative of the people there and showed how much love and spirit the Iranian people have. He didn’t gloss over any reservations he had about their government, but he showed a resilient society with people of all ages who just want to live their lives and have some joy. It pains me that the Iranian people have suffered so much from their recently disposed government’s campaigns of terrorism and religious extremism, the Shah’s seedy monarchy and from foreign governments including Israel and the USA through bombing. I fear for the people of Iran after the dust settles. I hope they can deal with the power vacuum better than other places we’ve “liberated “

Great to see the 1970’s Nazi Helmet haircut again ! Maybe – like the mullet – it’s overdue for a revival.

    11. As a young woman I used his book to travel when I was in college by myself through Europe and saved to spend 2 weeks in Europe.

This is back in the 90s when there was no Internet or phones. So all the planning was from his 10/day europe book.

      Had a blast.
