This trope sucks

    1. I like the versions where the guy who’s kicked out does like all the shit the rest of the party doesn’t want to do, like the paper work. And now the party is suffering because they don’t know how taxes work

    2. And then cue the obligatory. Noo we were wrong we need your help we know you were so strong it’s annoying

    3. And it’s always the medic or some kind of support getting kicked. The authors are definitely salty MMO/FPS players.

    4. BestSerialKillerNA on

There was one where they removed him from the party to keep him safe, and then the women immediately drop the goal of killing the big bad to go try to bang the dude.

    5. The most ridiculous of all is when they kick the healer out because he doesn’t have good offensive capabilities or something like that.

Like, *what*? I mean, I know this trope isn’t exactly famous for making sense in general, but this reaches a new level of nonsense with that.

    6. Gimme a run at this trope where the party aren’t cartoonishly evil about kicking MC out and they actually were holding the group back, so MC has to adjust to not being an adventurer or only being an unremarkable one while the party does go on to become heroes. Do it Frieren style over several years and show MC struggling to adjust but hopefully getting to a good place by the end of the story. Maybe the final arc is MC meeting up with the party leader for and finding out that the party’s success had costs and effects that, while worth it, helps MC get that final bit of closure.

    7. I feel that it’s a matter of storytelling. There are some “kicked from the party” stories that I think are good.

*Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside* – Okay, maybe this one isn’t that good, but I like the reason why the MC was kicked from the party. One of his teammates convinced him that he is no longer useful (the MC’s ability was more as a guide than OP himself) and got him to leave and retire.

*The Unaware Atelier Master* – The MC is F rank in every standard combat skill, but SSS rank in every support and utility skill. This leads to situations where he can simultaneously get creamed by a common slime, but 1HKO golems (as he is mining them for resources and doesn’t consider it combat).

It’s stupid when the MC is obviously OP but the Hero calls him useless, but it works if the party just took him for granted or underestimated the usefulness of having a support class in the party. Or if the Hero is a letch and is just mad at the MC for being a guy.
