Also, these people talking about them trying to get out of the war, that wasn’t the motivation. There were certain types of officers that would order stupid things regardless of whether it could succeed, or whether it put their soldiers in danger or not but just to show off to superiors. Bad officers were far more dangerous then the VC.

My dad was a marine in Vietnam. He said they got a new CO every couple of months. Just when the new officer was finally getting broken in and learning what to do and what not to do, he’d get rotated out and some brand new gung ho replacement would take his place.
