The “play bow” is a widely observed animal social signal that indicates that all bites and fighting that follow are play, not aggression!

    1. Nah, I don’t believe that. Like pointed out the bear and tiger are probably just stretching. I mean those 2 are solitary animals so with whom are they supposed to play? If a bear or tiger meets another one of their species they’ll just fight. But I’m not a wildlife expert.

    2. Are there studies that show this to be the case? What, if anything, is the functional difference between this motion and a meaningless shoulder stretch?

Not sure about the tiger or bear but it definitely is a part of dog communication. It’s funny to watch a dog’s reaction when their human bows like this. When I adopted a deaf six year old border collie from a shelter he hid under the bed and would not come out. After a couple days of unsuccessfully trying to coax him out, I finally got down on the floor next to the bed and started stretching and bowing. The dog came out from under the bed and started stretching and bowing. After a couple minutes of both of us doing this, he let me pet him!  We’ve been best friends ever since and he never hid under the bed again.

and it’s likely what will cause me to die at the hands of a cute animal I thought wanted to play.

Why don’t you go ahead and play with a bear and a tiger when they do this and see how far you get?

Coyotes have been seen doing this to house dogs to lure them to the pack and kill them. Just a heads up if you got a pupper.

Not only is this a misinformed representation of animal behavior, but a dangerous one at that.

Now I’m checking my cat for this since he’s constantly biting me and will make each bite and/or scratch progressively harder until he’s obviously gone too far and I have to react negatively.

    9. Ah yes, the Tiger and Polar Bear, 2 of the only 4 animals in the world that actively choose to hunt Humans. Surely they won’t bite!

Fake sneezing is another tell many animals use. They basically use it to say “yes”, “this is okay”, or “bring it on”, letting the other know that they are fine with their behavior.
