Back in the day, before everything could be done remotely, there were sex toys and other items sold in the back of magazines. What arrived (if anything) was absolute junk. Useless. But the return process (although guaranteed) was as embarrassing as they could make it. They’d require you to send it back with packaging and a business address that was clearly vulgar or humiliating if anyone saw you with the package. If you braved that part, the refund check you’d get would also show it was clearly from some embarrassing company name and memo. Most people would just accept the loss of $19.95 to avoid the potential embarrassment.
Edit to add clarity about the check: Depositing or cashing a check was a human interaction with a (usually female) bank teller.

Hoping that an off-market sex toy buyer has enough shame to restrain themselves is a risky bet.

people call the police and tell them their crack dealer ripped them off

I’m the type of neurodivergent where I cringe away from people trying to hug me and avoid situations where I might be expected to talk to strangers, but I’ll call a sex toy place and ask them to replace my toy due to a burnt out motor.
I once got a scam email from someone pretending to be the cops. It was fairly well edited to look official. It claimed there was suspicious activity from my IP address connected to CP sites. Then it said I could pay a fine now and the investigation wouldn’t go any further, or I could contest the charge in which there would be a full inquiry that could result in jail time.
I brushed it off as a pathetic lame scam meant to take advantage of panicky people but then it dawned on me that might be the only ethical scam. The only people who’d actually have reason to fear an inquiry would be those who actually have visited CP or CP-adjacent sites.
