    1. Maybe, just maybe, Social Security numbers were never supposed to serve as some kind of password

    2. bongohappypants on

Not to worry – we were promised when SS numbers were assigned that they would NEVER EVER be used as any sort of identification.

If it turns out they lied, it’s pretty clear they must all be fired. Top to bottom. Oh, and the usual crime for treason against your country.

    3. It will be investigated and they will find nothing other than all the SSN values are available to the public

We really should redo SSNs because that system is beyond broken and abused at this point

      Well, what did people expect?

Elon bought and paid for that data.
Data that no one else had access to.
      Data to feed the algorithm.

It wasn’t even secret, it was right out in the open.

We need to arrest and prosecute Musk for the millions of crimes he committed with DOGE, then we need to sue him into oblivion and use the money to fix bridges and build parks.

    7. Can you think of an easier way to throw the country into chaos before a major election? If so, we’ll do that one too.

So is Elon going to go to prison and reimburse the tax payers for how expensive and annoying that would be?

      May billionaire never exist again

Was there a security threat or is it:

      1. Get access to voter rolls and voting history.

      2. Pass the SAVE act.

      3. Require people to re-register to vote with stricter guidelines and more documentation where everything needs to match (sorry people who changed your name).

      4. Libraries stop issuing passports (a way to prove you’re eligible to vote). That’s OK. A majority of Americans don’t have one anyway.

      5. Have a “security breach” requiring people to change their SSN. Will anyone notice that blue voters or blue areas end up disproportionately impacted?

      6. Voters need to get a new SSN when resources have been gutted by DOGE and budget cuts. Major delays.

      7. Voters now need to re-prove they are who they claim to be at the registrar’s office when their SSN has been charged and/or their name was changed (marriage, transgender, or just a run of the mill name change.) I’m sure it won’t take TOO long to verify all this, right?

      8. We’re months away from an election that is not expected to go well for the powers that be.

    10. They are never going to go through the insane process of reissuing new social security numbers to everyone but if they even began to think about overhauling the just need to switch to a more modern solution. Preferably a multi layered solution between a few of these or others.

      1. Cryptographic Root Identity (public key based ID)
A government issued digital identity anchored to a secure public private key pair instead of a static number. Authentication happens by signing requests, which prevents reuse if data is stolen.

      2. Tokenized Identifiers (domain specific IDs)
Each institution receives a unique identifier mapped to a person rather than a universal number. A breach in one system does not expose identity elsewhere because tokens cannot be reused.

      3. Verifiable Credentials in a Digital Identity Wallet
Individuals hold digitally signed credentials like citizenship or work authorization and share only the specific attributes needed. This reduces data exposure and allows selective disclosure instead of full identity sharing.

Oh fun! I’m sure this will have absolutely no impact whatsoever on everyone getting the passports they need to vote…

    12. Arrogant egomania is not a positive attribute of leadership. Makes the folks in charge believe they are infallible and therefore they are prone to making lots of huge mistakes.

Give a raging narcissist power and it is a guarantee they will abuse it, and also make a whole bunch of stupid mistakes that they then double down on to save face. Image is more important to the narcissist than actual effective leadership or ethical decision making. In many cases, their own image is the only thing the egomaniacal narcissist gives two hoots about.

The fun thing is how in Elon’s case, the image he feels he should project appears to be that of a deeply flawed person who is not nearly as wise as he believes himself to be. And he keeps proving those things repeatedly.

      Feature not a bug.

They’re pushing hard for more tracking and more surveillance, all social security compromised makes a more dystopian citizen tracking system a “Needed fix”.
