The Sathmahal Prasada (“Seven Story Palace/Tower”) was built in the 12th century and is a step pyramid often considered to be a Buddhist temple. However its true purpose and builder is currently unknown. It is often compared to a similar stupa located in Thailand and to the Buddhist architecture of Cambodia.

Despite the actual history of this place not being known, the Mahawamsa (a history written from the 5th century A.D onwards) states that King Parakramabahu I the Great built a seven story tower in Polonnaruwa. Similarly, an inscription nearby states that King Nissankamalla created a seven story palace in 45 days. However it is unsure if these sources mention specifically the Sathmahal Prasada.
