‘The Fourth Crusade’

    1. Once you’ve played Medieval 2 Total War’s Crusades Campaign as the Byzantine you’ll never stop wanting to beat the Venetians to death with your bare hands.

    2. It amazes me how many westerners I see lamenting the Fall of Constantinople in 1453 when they were the ones who began its long, slow death in 1204.

    3. I was pretty amused when I visited Venice.

You would have thought the Venetians would have been a trifle ashamed of the Fourth Crusade, but not a bit of it – they revelled in the memory!

There was a huge painting of their glorious success in the Ducal palace, and St. Michael’s is covered with stuff they literally pried out of Constantinople as loot.

I particularly enjoyed the statue of the four emperors, which is cemented into the outer wall.
