It does seem that way.

NYC seems to be doing well. But it’s still too early ro officially say how things have worked.

    2. This tells me two things.

American cops are too trigger happy and need to be taught deescalation, like cops in Europe.

Most criminals are not evil monsters, they’re desperate people who feel trapped and don’t wanna hurt anyone. Yes the evil pos who revel in hurting others exist, but they’re not the majority.

    3. No, cops did not quit “en masse’. NYC cops don’t quit. After 5 1/2 yrs salary is $126,410. 27 Vac days after 7 yrs. Full medical, dental, vision, unlimited sick time. Top pay is $60 an hour, the average cop worked 375 hours of OT in 2020 at $90 an hour, some did 1200 hours.

Find a white collar job nowadays earning that needing only 24 college credits.

    4. That and we just had 16 inches of snow and the longest sub freezing streak in city history, but yeah there may also be some correlation there too.

    5. Someone should do a study 📚 f crime statistics compared to weather. Is it a gradual decline in line with temperature or is there an inflection point at 20 degrees

    6. When a couple of guys with guns and borderline immunity to consequences show up, it adds a certain tension to any interaction, and it’s rarely appropriate for the problems we face in our communities.

That’s why I’m pushing to redirect 25% of police budget to social services here in Denver w/ Denver For All . We can do even better with intentional planning and budgeting, on constructively addressing mental health crisis, homelessness, and substance use.

Here in Denver, we’ve paid out over $40 million in misconduct settlements in Denver for the police in last 7 years, meanwhile the Support Team Assisted Response program (STAR) has handled over 8k calls, no misconduct settlements, no police backup required.

Well, half of this isn’t true.

The rumor that 5,000 officers resigned claim was false; there was no evidence of an organized resignation campaign by NYPD officers in response to Mamdani’s election. The user who originally posted the video did not offer any evidence to support the claim. We reached out to the user for more information about why he made the post and will update this article if we receive a response.

I live in NYC and voted for Mamdani but causation does not imply correlation necessarily. It has been the coldest January I can remember in 10+ years of living here, it is simply too cold to be out doing anything, crimes included.

    9. Yall are ridiculous. It’s a one month sample size which is hardly a correlation yet alone causation for cops quitting. Now if the statistic was officer involved shootings (which stayed level), you may have some correlation, but definitely not for general shootings and homicides.

Real reason is it’s one of the colder January’s and there was a targeted increase of police presence in high risk areas. Hopefully it can be sustained.

    10. Well, I doubt the mayor did anything to effect this one way or another. It probably has more to do with the absolute bitter cold weather.

MAGA: “How DARE Mamdani do this?? Less crime means less cops and that means less cops get paid!! He’s Anti-Police!!!”

    12. I’m shocked that an intellectual powerhouse such as “ChubberDunkus” doesn’t know the difference between “en masse” and “on mass.”

    13. I’m a left leaning voter who usually goes democrat and it’s pretty obvious this is due to cold and snow. There is usually a drop in crime during cold months.

    14. I’m happy it’s down, but I feel like it’s been too cold to be out and committing crimes. It makes me think how when it warms up for summer, crime goes up too. Shouldn’t the inverse be true too?

    15. Not to blow the wind out of anyone sails but it’s being contributed to the “Winter Violence Reduction Plan”. Which from what I could find was started in 2021 and has lower gun violence by 60% since then.

Up to 1800 officers protroling 64 of the highest crime zones across 33 precincts.

Also the city has lost over 1.3% of all store since December due to crime. Also the city has lost 1/2 a million people since 2024.

Less people + less stores + smarter police protroling = safer city?

As far as I have read the mayor has done nothing new on law enforcement yet

It’s the coldest January in sometime it might have something to do with it.

If he could get residential trash collected which hasn’t been the case for 14 days, that would be wonderful. /s

    17. Also one of the coldest Januaries in recent history. Apparently NY criminals don’t like the cold. Talk to me come March.

    18. Way off-topic, but if anyone cares, the phrase is “en masse”.

It’s a French phrase, and “on mass” is nonsensical and very jarring to me when I see it.

    19. Cops in the US are taught to see ALL behavior as suspicious. Person lets off the gas as they pass a speed trap, even though they weren’t speeding? That’s suspicious, only people with something to hide go the speed limit. Person is going 2 miles over the limit? Suspicious, what drugs are they trafficking? Woman avoids speaking with cops on the street? Suspicious, only women doing something nefarious would want to avoid cops.

Cops have gotten more aggressive, which has caused most of the public to withdraw from interacting with LEOs. Police use this to justify their overly paranoid culture.

      Edit: swapped in for is

    20. Crime is trending down nationwide and it’s a very cold January with a lot of snow. Crime is generally lower in winter.

I’m doubtful of any correlation with cops quitting. I don’t even know if a significant amount did.

    21. CagliostroPeligroso on

You have to be practical here tho. Part of that is simply because the crime is still happening and not being caught at all. I think majority is bad cops off the street and the work he’s doing to improve QOL

    22. UnhappyReason5452 on

      En masse ffs.

I’m sure the shit weather also contributed, but still interesting. Remove one armed gang from the streets and crime seems to go down. Crazy how that works.

Hopefully it continues, but 1 data point is not statistically significant.

If it does continue, hopefully other cities take notice.
