I will skip house keeping for nothing. Last thing I want is someone coming into my room where all my travel belongings are when I’m not there.
Edit: I will skip house keeping for free

Tbh I prefer not to have housekeeping enter my room anyway. Why in the world would I need someone to clean the room and change the bedding when I’m only there for a few days to maybe a week?
If I can get a free beer for opting out, that’s a great bonus!

Meridian is awesome.

Would be pretty funny if people ended up littering the streets outside the hotel with beer cans.

Well that’s awesome, I never even realized I was saving the environment by not wanting anyone to come into the room when I’m not there.

And neither party actually cares about the environment. The hotel saves money and the customer gets a free beer

This is neat.
But my inner cynic can’t help but wonder how much work that asterisk is putting in.

Oh fuck yeah. I basically leave the do not disturb sign on the door all the time. I can handle my own shit, and I don’t need my bed made every night. I also don’t want someone I don’t know rifling around my stuff

This is great. I always opt out of housekeeping because I’m not a racoon. I wish this was standard practice everywhere.

If I’m paying for a room, they’re cleaning it every day and taking out the trash. This corporation is not doing this to save the environment. They’re doing it to save cost on labor. I leave nothing of value when I leave my room. Are they going to steal my underwear? Lol

I’m so disappointed in the habits people put up when staying at a hotel. Nobody thinks about what environmental damage it makes to demand a clean room, sheets and towels everyday.
And for what? So you don’t have to act like a decent human being when sleeping somewhere else? Does this give you a sense of freedom? Behaving like a pig just because some low income worker has to clean your shit up?
How to act like a guest is unfortunately something western cultures haven’t learned yet.

I used to travel a lot for work and the organization I was with would actually encourage use to not skip housekeeping as it takes away from people’s jobs. If enough hotel guests put the do not disturb sign up, they cut hours of the housekeepers.
It’s hard because I agree with you all, I hate the thought of someone in my room moving my belongings around. I actually had my prescription medication stolen from my bathroom on one of those particular work meetings. Frustrating.

This is great – but also just one more way they’re cutting costs post COVID. It’s not really about consumer benefit or the environment – it’s about them saving money.

I would appreciate it a lot more if they were honest and went with help us save money rather than help us save the environment.

Roughly 30 years ago and cleaning person came into our hotel room and stole my stuffed lamb. Every since then I’ve developed huge trust issues.

This is common. Doubletree hilton does it too. Voucher for their bar.

They know not many people can drink just 1 beer… most will certainly buy more after the first. Win win for them.
FandomMenace on
Ok, but if they put it off, is it actually saving them money? The amount of work just accumulates.

Because a beer is cheaper than the labor time to clean your room and wash your bedding and towels…. You’re welcome.

Me, who sleeps late and usually avoids house-keeping because of this: why do I have so much beer?

Now this is a green initiative I can get behind.

Its “for the environment” but it also helps them to save a ton on labor. The cost of the beer is negligible to them. Its a smart move.

In America they pay the housekeepers less than the price of a beer.

Often a bigger job for each room like this though at check out. With the housekeeping staff having to have rooms turned down by check in time. Really messy rooms will take more time. I worked in hotels for years. Some of those rooms get left like Motley Crues tour bus from the 1980s at the end.
Staff in many places has to wear other hats as it is, with the post covid world having changed things. One place I worked at the FD staff would often join the bell desk for the day. And the bell desk would help clean the lobby at night due to staffing issues. This was before covid too.

Very much greenwashing, this isn’t about the environment, this is about them having to do less work without you complaining.
That being said, unless I’m staying for long periods, I don’t want anybody in the room anyway.

Beats the “For environmental reasons, this room is to be cleaned once every 4 days” paper I have seen in one small town motel.
I was there one night. Still asking myself if that meant it was not cleaned after the previous stay and just tidied up, or if it is cleaned after each guest.

I stayed at a Virgin Hotel a few months ago and got (I think) $15 for the minibar for every day I didn’t get housekeeping.
