This is a Boeing 747 at cruise speed… filmed from another plane

Your brain refuses to believe how fast this actually is.

    1. Oh I believe, you can hear perfectly the sound, especially if you are in the back of the airplane!

    2. What is this bullshit title… Also the video doesn’t help visualizing the actual speed of the plane

    3. It’s not that our brains ‘refuse to believe it’

It’s because of the relative speed to the spot filming it gives off that illusion of it seeming slower than it really is.

I can’t tell how fast this is because the point of reference is literally moving just as fast in a random direction.

    5. The Boeing 747 typically cruises at speeds between Mach 0.84 and 0.86, roughly 490 to 570 knots ((560)–(660) mph or (900)–(1060) km/h), depending on the variant. The advanced 747-8 variant is known to operate at a higher cruise speed of around Mach 0.86 ((570) mph) at (35,000) feet.

I am capable of believing that this plane can go 10 times the speed of light, I believe it religiously, don’t tell me what I can’t believe.

    7. My brain is perfectly capable of understanding and believing how fast this is. 747’s usually cruise between Mach 0.8 and 0.9, roughly 500 knots, or 575mph (926kph). Keep in mind this is air speed, so depending on if they are flying in calm air, or heavy head/tail wind, this could be anywhere from 450-650 mph ground speed.

It’s fast, especially compared to a car, but it’s not mind bendingly fast. Once you start talking about ludicrous speeds, like referring to speeds as a percentage of the speed of light, that’s where it gets hard to understand. Even still, I’m able to believe it, my mind never tells me ‘no I don’t believe that’.

    8. Dude it has nothing to do with your brain refusing to believe how fast it is. This video is just missing a proper reference point to the plane to enable you to see how fast it’s moving.

Well I thought it was a boat about to crash to begin with, then a plane spraying agent orange.

    10. Surely filmed from the cockpit… You couldn’t get that amount of tracking from a window seat. And there’d be that pesky reflection.

Planes are wicked fast for sure. Ive driven from PA to FL a couple times, takes about 17 hours give or take a bit. Flying takes 2.5 hours. Even with a strightish line as opposed to roads, that time difference is nuts!

Just, try picture a double wide, triple height, super long train car crammed with 3 to 4 hundred people ripping down the highway at FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTY MPH.

Imagine going fast enough to cover multiple football fields every second. That’s how fast we’re going while on a plane at cruising speed.

You’ll start to kind of see the speed of that plane as it gets closer to the camera. Either way, planes are quite fast.
