Heavenly Puss. 1949. Always loved that short as a child. The Hell sequences. That bulldog-devil’s lusty laughter always unnerved me. And those poor little kittens . . . 😢

The fact that even in The last airbender cartoon showed genocide shows a meme i found recently
In the past cartoons were for children, and liked by children
Now the cartoons are liked by adults

Tbf that’s one of those background references that adults will get but children won’t

They should make cartoons like this with dark humor again. The kids won’t even notice, anyway.

Children’s shows can have adult themes and lessons while not being explicit

These classic shorts were shown in theaters before the movie so they were actually aimed at adults. Cartoons didn’t become “for children” until the 1960s when Hanna-Barbera’s stuff would dominate television and were cheaply made, low-quality and shown in children’s blocks.

one of my favorite Popeye episodes was the one where he had a sailor friend who would frequently threaten to shoot himself, and the episode ends with Popeye shooting him after that friend somehow ruins everything else

I remember getting my 8 yr old daughter all amped to watch the cartoons I grew up on. Until Looney Tunes disclaimer said: This video contains violence, blackface, smoking, alcohol consumption..

I remember seeing this and just being so traumatized by the implications

No, this is true: kids need some semblance of slapstick comedy that mirrors real life… this horribly mind-numbing bullshit going on today that pushes an unachievable utopia makes kids develop oddly.
When cartoons had violence, dark jokes, and nonsensical comedy, they were better.
