    1. No helmet, standing out in the open when everyone is armored lying down…yeah that’ll do it.

The idea of a political commissar is so interesting as a role in the military. Spreading ideology and keeping soldiers loyalty in check is such a morally corrupt job

    3. Jumping into an open battlefield with no helmet but your piss cover and a pistol is so dumb.

    4. If he’s leading why is he behind the photographer?

Why would the photographer be in front?

      Staged…

the feeling of charging with your boys into battle was probably a wild . especially with a war like this

    6. Looks like a charge where he is standing when should keep his head down and use a helmet. Damn it Alexey, risk management! Don’t make yourself the biggest target on the battlefield!

    7. Apparently no one, least of all the photographer, was sure who this guy was. The most accepted story is that he was the political commissar, and had just taken acting command of the battalion after its normal commander was injured. The title of the photo, _Kombat_, basically means “battalion commander”. Political commissars started the war as co-commanders, and were later subordinated to the military officers and limited to morale functions.

    8. “In the soviet army it takes more courage to retreat than to advance”

And assholes like him where the reason for that. Let him rot in hell next to the Nazi’s he fought.
