This happened according to William Sherman in his 1979 Forced Native Labor in Sixteenth-Century Central America. Fortunately, the Spanish Crown banned the branding natives on their faces later that year, in 1532.

      Why would you brand a person with a mark of non slavery? A mark of slavery I get, I don’t support, but I do understand why someone would do that.

      I can see where it solves the issue of proving that you’ve been freed, but DAMN!
