Guns are a cultural identity marker for a lot of these people, like their little shiny gold crosses or their “traditional family values”. They mainly use it to exclude others without having to specifically talk about keeping out the “others” from their identity space.
Trump has shown how empty and hypocritical they are though, because everything he does is 100 times worse than anything they’ve ever blamed on other groups and they still stick by his side.
