I kind of have a hunch that movie theaters mark some seats as unavailable as a tactic to make people feel like they need to buy tickets before their seats get sold. I’ve seen this happen at a couple of theaters where the seats seem fine, but are marked as unavailable even though we’re the only ones in the movie. They’re also usually really inconvenient seats in weird spaces.
