Gotta love this “I’ve more or less done it in my day, so everybody should do it” -mentality.

    2. The timing of that is hilarious. That’s the only part that’s funnny. It’s sad that athletes push themselves into medically dangerous territory in order to make weight for fights. Doctors should be involved at weigh-in checking for dehydration, tachycardia and any other weight cutting maladies that can come up. Both the fighter and coaches should be fined for being so reckless.

    3. I never understood why they couldn’t do a second weigh in 1 minute before the fight. Don’t give them time to rehydrate.

    4. I will never forget this one guy. We both were fighting in the national TKD tournament. Both heavyweights, but he was too shortl to fight at nationals as a heavy. He has to go down, and for him, that means 17 pounds. NBD. He is already qualified and he has 2 months. 100% doable.

2 days before his fight, he shows up and he hasn’t done anything. Still 17 over. This dummy spends the next 2 days just wrecking his body. The stairs, the sauna, all the garbage bags. He showed up to the weigh in looking like an ashy zombie. He made weight and was immediately dispatched in his fight.

Take care of your business boys and girls. Don’t be this guy.

      “this is the thing”

yes. absolutely hit the nail on the head. it literally is the thing.

these humans are already bashing in their heads for money. why do we have these rules and rituals that quite frankly are 100% detrimental and avoidable and are like 99% not necessary for the spectacle

    6. I really don’t get it. I walked at 210 and fought at 205 for years and even when moving up to fight at 225, I didn’t feel weight was the difference maker. There’s so many better ways to spend your training and prep time than just “bend the rules so I can weigh more”.

They’re talking about weight cutting at the event he weight cuts for……………………

    8. What is the reason weigh in isn’t right before the fight? That would stop so much of this crap.

    9. PM_ME_SOME_BUTT on

Wtf does he mean “you’ve got 1 job” when talking about the weigh-in? They also have to FIGHT someone. If you’re going to oversimplify this to just one job, I’d say the fighting is more important than the weigh-in.

    10. I think what he means is that the fighters have known about which weight class they will be fighting in ahead of time by months. There is no need to cut this much weight on the last week before the fight. They should have gradually done it over time.

I wouldn’t call this funny in the least. As a matter of fact it’s sad on many levels.

Bisping isn’t wrong though. They have a job and a contract, show up, make weight, fight. I’m not a fighter, and it probably shows my naivety, but why do you have to crash diet to make weight? This just seems dangerous.

    13. why didn’t they change this already? having them make the weight for multiple days at unannounced times or something like that?

or just do the weighing right before the start of round one.

    14. Man, fuck that. Anyone who has been around a fight camp with someone who isn’t a name knows that it’s “easy “ is bullshit. It’s easy when like he said it’s your job but the key word missing there is ONLY. If it were these guys only hustle it’d have more weight. But watching a man trying to balance all of the camp with family and a regular job is hard as fuck. That’s why it’s noteworthy when a guy wins a championship on Saturday and still clocks in to his construction job on Monday. That shit is brutal and how we end up with people cutting dangerously and feinting

    15. Each of the three are out of shape whining about how it couldn’t be *that hard* to get down to weight (which in most cases for fighters is an extreme ~5% bf) is fucking hilariously ironic.

    16. States how he has no sympathy, and then immediately gains sympathy. Hope that conversation changed after that

    17. The way the weight ins work today is a perverse incentive. The guys are fighting a whole category above and just dehydrate for the weight in. It is stupid and dangerous.
They should make it so you have to be on weight an hour before the fight or at minimum the same day. But since you’d miss on media coverage it’s never going to happen.

    18. Samurai_Stewie on

The fact that everyone knew exactly what happened and why should be enough for change to happen; it’s almost always necessary and always a motivating factor and it shouldn’t be. All they need to do is add another requirement to pass weight: a blood or at least saliva hydration test.
