They support “free speech” in the sense that they don’t want to be called out when they express their morally repugnant views. They don’t mind if the government is used as a cudgel to quiet viewpoints that are different than theirs.
The key thing that they don’t understand is that the Constitution does not protect your speech from public criticism; it is supposed to protect it from government censorship. They don’t see the difference between the two somehow and feel that weaponizing the government against their critics is justified when they’re in power. Basically they refuse to understand the Constitution and make it everyone else’s problem.

And the current state of things has really showcased PEOPLE do this, not sides. Because 10 years ago, it was the left yearning for censorship and the political correctness by any means necessary. Which had the adverse effect of birthing this monster. And at the time the right was championing free speech and wanted to combat that censorship. But as the balance has switched and that side now has to be criticized as the majority, the hypocrisy is blatant. Its people that do this. Humans. I think whats it shown is not anything about one side or the other, but that the amendments written by those old men 250 years ago were truly ahead of their time and that the line of thinking and foresight they had was astronomically lucky for us to have inherited at all. Because people as a whole in power never have the gumption or the self awareness to stand by their words and make the hard decisions, embracing what those freedoms mean in all of their glory for better or worse of the individual.

It should be illegal to spread certain ideologies. After WWII, Germany banned nazi symbols and rhetoric. The US should have done something similar after defeating the confederates in the Civil War. The first amendment was a mistake and is the reason why religious extremists are now running our country.
