I watched a fellow traveler slip and slide down his butt on those stairs as a tourist in the late 90s. I don’t remember carpeting on them at that time. We joked about him “riding the wave.”
It’s absolute visual poetry.
I read somewhere an essay written at the time about the art nouveau style as being ‘an artistic style for sick people who do not want to be made well’ and I still don’t know how I feel about that.
