      By comparison, the closest current train, the Lake Shore Limited, apparently does it in 19.5 hours.

    3. Makes Amtrak look cheap! (Albeit with far better service.)

      Wikipedia says a ticket in the 20s could easily run north of $40, or ~$750 today.

      I don’t know why, but my head compares this to the cannonball run record which was 25 hours and 39 minutes, but didn’t stop and Chicago and went to LA.

      It just seems really obvious to me that if we *as a society* decided to have a high-speed land route (probably rail) from NYC to LA, we could go as fast as the hooligans have already proven is physically possible. The fact that we can’t manage this option due to expense or rent-seeking or whatever… it’s upsetting.
