He’s gonna be their “black” friend when he grows up

    1. Tyrone is originally an Irish name. Due to Anglo-Saxon descendants of Pilgrims in the violently racist antebellum south segregating Irish and Scottish indentured servants with the African slaves, some culture trade was made.

So, not out of character entirely that a white man is named Tyrone.

    2. It’s also an Irish name, so I can see some really really sheltered people coming across it in a baby name book and not realising it’s actual cultural use in America (especially if they’re the sort of people who come up with their dream kids names at like 13 who are pretty common in Utah)

I am in my 40’s and the stereotypical name for black men then was Leroy. The first ever Leroy I met was a white transfer student. Also the name Leroy was introduced after the Norman conquest and basically means “the King”

Wait til you hear about Black Americans being born in Utah! I know a few of them, as I’m a former SLC resident myself. I’m not from there though. After a decade, they’re still some of my closest friends.

Exactly. Names carry so much history, and it’s wild how they cross cultures and time like that.
