When the military raided La Moneda (Chile’s presidential palace) during the coup d’etat (the Air Force had bombed it earlier), Allende made his last stand alongside some close friends with an AK rifle gifted to him by Castro. While a lot can be argued about the economical effects of Allende’s reforms, he got to power not through a violent revolution but was democratically elected. That’s the core essence of the ‘Chilean way to socialism’. Nevertheless, the Armed Forces (with backing from the political opposition) crushed that political project mercilessly.
