At that price I’d expect it to come with a certificate, a velvet box, and a personal apology when I cut it open and it tastes like a normal watermelon.

    2. Looks like it was successful in getting you to do some free online advertising for their store, so maybe the price isn’t as crazy as you think.

    3. Expensive gift fruits are very much part of the culture. It’s like the western culture of giving a friend expensive alcohol.

Such fruits are meant as a gift for your boss, business clients or someone similar you want to impress.
The ridiculous prices (which are assumed to be known to the giftee too) are the whole point.

    5. The squared watermelon isn’t designed for eating but essentially a power move.

The fruit is edible but is dry and probably one of the worst watermelons you have since they pluck it under ripped.

But having a square watermelon as display is a rich power move thus the price.

A pyramid watermelon is higher class. And more of a boss move.

It clearly wasn’t handled very well along the way, that thing is scarred. Years ago I remember reading an article about fruit gifting in Japan, and one of the things that stuck out to me was how carefully melons like this are tended to. Someone didn’t get the memo.
