A U.S. Marine raises the Confederate battle flag over Shuri Castle. The Marine was from the self-styled “Rebel Company” (Company A of the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines). Deemed inappropriate, the flag, which was visible for miles, was taken down after three days (Okinawa, 1945) [1403 x 1104].

It was flown in Vietnam as well.
With how small that flag was, and it was visible for miles? Bullshit.
While I’m sure Redditors will be upset about it, but this actually served a strategic purpose.
After capturing the castle, they realized no one had brought an American flag to raise atop the castle in order to signal to soldiers that the castle was in American hands. All they had, was a confederate flag that a southern soldier had brought with them. They took what they had and rose the Confederate flag as a substitute since people would still understand that it meant Americans had captured the castle.
Imagine flying the confederate flag while fighting in the very army that destroyed the confederacy. The irony is amazing.
