Both of these arguments are terrible, even though one of them is used to justify the killing of the natives, but still

    1. Ugh. What do you mean I can’t sum up multiple civilisations and people in a single sentence.

      People are monoliths right?

    2. This just in: Pre-Colombian Civilizations were human beings just like you and me! They were capable of good and evil just like any human being! They were neither saints nor devils! More at 8!

You’re telling me HISTORY ISN’t BLACK AND WHITE?! I AM SHOCKED ABOUT THIS REVELATION!

      /s just incase

    4. Gasp.. a community of human beings are beyond the space of just being labelled as purely good or purely evil? Who would have thought this /s

Historical nuance in my r/HistoryMemes? Get outta here.

In all seriousness, I 100% agree. First Peoples’ civilizations were just as creative and flawed as those of Eurasia, but those flaws do not excuse or justify colonialism, imperialism, and genocide.

This would greatly anger Latin American left-wing and right-wing politicians if they knew how to read English

Also, and I can’t believe this has to be said, civilizations don’t have to be saintly in order to not be deserving of genocide and colonization.

They were pretty brutal, terrible, and inhumane. But this was more like the ruling class. Most natives had nothing to do with sacrifices and warfare.

Did the ruling class deserve to be wiped out from the face of the earth? Maybe. But, as usual, they got a pass while innocent civilians were massacred.

With “getting a pass,” I mean that the spanish empire made most of them nobles to make sure they kept oppressing the lowerclasses for profit.

Thank you, I am so sick of being shamed by both sides when I both pointed out the good and bad. Different cultures of a different time people. Yeah I don’t support what they did but I also don’t support them getting exterminated.

The Spanish didn’t want to anihilate the indigenous people, but to seize power over them. But then European plagues happened.

All im saying is, there’s a reason a lot of them flipped to side with the Spanish to fuck the Aztecs up

As an aspiring historian, I don’t like how sometimes the stereotype of the “Noble Savage” is applied to extra European populations, describing them always as victims of ruthless white people that are responsible of every crime in human history. Things should be more nuanced than that: basically no people or civilization to this day is innocent: slavery for example was present in most of them since the beginning, and so were others form of violence (war).
