Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu ruled the Eastern European country with an iron fist from 1965-1989 that some would consider the most totalitarian regime on the European continent.
After nearly 25 years of his rule, protests erupted across the country culminating in the Romanian Revolution. What little support for his regime collapsed after troops fired on protesters in December of 1989.
After attempting to flee by helicopter, him and his wife were captured, tried, and convicted for genocide. The couple was executed by firing squad on live television on Christmas Day, 1989.
