This was Moscow, August 1991, Tushino Airfield, at Monsters of Rock. The USSR technically still existed, but it was literally collapsing that month. Somewhere between 500,000 and 1.6 million people turned up depending on who you believe.

    2. Cold War Might’ve been freezing, but Metallica Melted the ice with pure riffs History class never Sounded this loud.

I’m not even a fan, but I see the fire. They look like they were at their energetic peak. I love hearing young eager bands play.

    4. Back when James didn’t butcher the old stuff with his clean singing… He sounds too happy while performing songs that are meant to be angry.. If you like their newer stuff (I’m old, so newer stuff is anything recorded after 1988), then good for you, I’m glad you enjoy it, but it’s not for me.

And while I don’t like the black album, James hadn’t had singing lessons then, so I enjoyed much of their live material from this era. (I saw them in 93 with Kyuss opening for them… Kyuss have been my favourite band for the last 20ish years). And this concert in Moscow was amazing!

    5. I’ve seen this show a couple times but only just now noticed that Jason is wearing a Metallica shirt. This is the only band I’ve ever seen wear their own shirt and they’ve done it at least twice, Lars is wearing one in the video for One.
