    1. Context: The Russo-Turkish Wars were fought between the 16th and 20th-centuries. Russia and the Ottoman Empire fought over dominance in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, the Balkans and in the Black Sea. The last of the wars took place during WW1, between 1914 and 1917, the year the Russian Empire collapsed. The Ottomans, however, would face their own collapse in 1922, sparking the Turkish War of Independence.
