I was just reading up on the “first” aircraft carriers and it’s interesting how the Royal Navy basically set the blueprint for everything we see today. The HMS Hermes was technically the first ship in the world to be designed and built as an aircraft carrier from the ground up (unlike the conversions of the time).

Even though it was tiny compared to a modern Ford-class, it already had the “island” on the side and the full-length flight deck. It’s wild that they got the basic layout so “right” on the first try before anyone really knew how naval aviation would even work.
