Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco and UC Berkeley developed a brain-computer interface (BCI) that has enabled a woman who couldn’t speak for about 18 years after a stroke to communicate by decoding her brain’s speech signals with AI. The implant records neural activity in the speech area and AI translates it into spoken words and facial movements via a digital avatar. The work was published in Nature Neuroscience and is part of ongoing clinical research, though it’s still experimental and not widely available yet.

Until you lose the ability to speak, you have no idea just how isolating it is. I couldn’t speak for a few months, and it was incredibly tough. It felt frustrating and humiliating, and still does at times. Self service checkouts and my notes app were my absolute saviour.
I’ve done speech therapy and now I can speak, albeit a little quieter than most people. I can’t raise my voice though, and loud spaces like restaurants, bars, and pubs are very difficult for me, and probably always will be. But a video like this can put it into perspective.
I love that this woman can communicate again and I wish her a lifetime of happiness.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say it unnerved me and yet…this is fucking awesome. I’m really hopeful for this technology.
Whats why I cant be completely anti AI, because it can be used for so much good. There are countless other examples in various fields, but people keep using it to generate stupid pictures, rip of artists or bc people are too lazy to do a simply google search.

Whilst this a fantastic outcome for the lady, I can also see some issues like when the computer says stuff you had never intended to say, unrelated stuff or even if somebody hacks into the system and takes control of your voice…
We can stop using ai for everything else aside from this. This is actually helpful
