Reminds me of a really sad fact/thought for the black plague. Essentially, anyone who was trying to *help* the plague victims would just die. So those left were the cowards.

And they killed cats because they thought they were familiar of the devil, which allowed the rat population to explode

There’s also the fact that sick people converged at places of healing, which were coincidentally run by the church. Even today hospitals are the number one place people die, and even hospital staff get REALLY sick very frequently, especially new hires.
