This is a great example of how cavities are larger than what you can see. Bacteria create a weak point in the enamel, and then hollow out the softer inside of the tooth (dentin). Ive had patients tell me their tooth suddenly “broke” – but other than fracturing a tooth, lots of times it’s because you can’t see the damage until it gets real bad.
