We’ve been watching tv with subtitles for years. Since our kids were born.
Our tv room was very close to their bedrooms. So we got in the habit of watching tv with the volume really low – just loud enough that we can hear tone of voice and timing and stuff – but with subtitles we never miss anything.
Now we can’t watch anything without them.

I’m not deaf but I prefer subtitles being on. It stemmed from me in an HMO so I could watch shows at night without the volume disturbing others.
Now I am use to the lower volume and prefer to have the other to read the dialogue as well. (Plus I think it’s help me skim read things better as well)

I started when I didn’t want to wake the babies while watching TV. Then I appreciated not missing words here and there. Especially on movies with the ridiculous dynamic range.
I also heard it was good for kids as they’re learning to read.
Now the only time I turn it off is for live events like sports or news. It bothers me when the text is 10 seconds behind or when it covers up the score bugs.

I’m old now so I use them all the time. I used them previously because of watching Japanese movies, which my brother and I would laugh during growing up, because the dubbing was so bad it was comical. We thought it was intentionally that way. When I watched them in Japanese I found the actors to be fantastic. It was so full of emotion I almost didn’t need to know what they were saying. I swore off anything dubbed and always watch in the original language.

That said, I saw a show on HBO had ASL support, why would that be necessary if they have closed captions?

not deaf but proper audio mixing seems to be a lot art in the movie industry. mumbling dialogue cutting over each other amid explosions and background music. never have this issue while watching old films.

Hearing impaired and I have used subtitles so long I forget they’re not on by default when I go to a theater 😂
Nothing wrong with my hearing, but y’all wanna talk while the people on the screen are talking, so the subtitles stay on.
