    1. **Context:** In the early 1990s, Sierra Leone was collapsing under the brutal insurgency of the **RUF (Revolutionary United Front)**, famous for their “long sleeve/short sleeve” atrocities. After the United Nations and various regional powers failed to stabilize the country, the Sierra Leonean government hired **Executive Outcomes**, a private military company based in South Africa.

      Composed primarily of veteran bush war specialists from the SADF and 32 Battalion and led by Lt. Col. Eeben Barlow, EO did in a few months what the international community and UN couldn’t do in years. With a tiny force, a few transport helicopters, and one Mi-24 gunship, they cleared the diamond fields and forced the RUF to the negotiating table for the Abidjan Peace Accord.
