You’d be correct, it is deeply rooted in the GOPs identity, and has been for a while.
For years now if you wanted to find someone who’d argue against mandatory reporting of child abuse you’d look to the Republicans. If you wanted to find someone defending the institute of under-age marriage you’d look to the Republicans. If you wanted to find someone who’d advocate forcing a child to carry a rapist’s baby to term you’d look to the Republicans. If you wanted to find someone who’d argue against funding programs to make sure kids were safe, fed, healthy, and had opportunities you’d look to the Republicans. Etc.
