Royal Air Force uniform buttons were ingeniously designed to conceal escape and evasion compasses to help downed airmen find their way if shot down over enemy territory;

I was in the Royal Dutch Air Force. They also teach you how to find North using an analog watch and things like what side of a tree the moss is growing During daytime. At night of course you can use the stars. We also got training using a military compass.
In the Netherlands though it’s really hard to get lost! It’s such a small country that just the ability to walk in a straight line for 10 min. You would hit some form of civilisation.
