I remember this stuff. I also remember it being not very good at holding model kits together.

That is one ad that is furiously tap dancing around “something”.

I was a very lightly supervised child who loved to build models. I recall hours upon hours spent building them with the original Testors plastic cement and paint thinner/cleaner in a small enclosed room.
I remember feeling wacked out of my skull on several occasions, but no adult ever stepped in to make any changes (ventilation?). I never deliberately made it worse, but the intended use was more than enough.

I remember during my model building days that suddenly I had to have my Mom with me when buying Testors plastic model cement.

Was Testors lemon-scented also at some point, maybe by 1980?
I don’t remember this brand, but I definitely remember Testors had a relatively pleasant scent. Maybe not what you want to do if it’s an intoxicant and used by a lot of kids.

Who uses glue like that on a model?! -apparently the glue issue led to modelers developing the inferior junky “snap tight” models…

I never liked the stuff. It was pretty useless, it just didn’t hold. We did discover though that it burned well, so we used it to dispose of our old unwanted plastic models.

“won’t string out” , or string *you* out.

The worst was when Testors put out the clear glue pot with the brush applicator, then it got difficult to find it in tubes.
I don’t remember NOTOX at all.

It doesn’t smell like glue???? Then why bother.

What’s the point in using model glue if it doesn’t buzz you out of your gourd? That was the whole point of making model cars/planes!

Just a bit of solvent abuse. A wholesome American pastime.

I’m reminded of a joke from the Drew Carey Show. After a bad breakup, Drew distracts himself by building model kits. After about a half-a-dozen, he reads the fine print on the tube of model cement.
“New non-toxic formula? No wonder this isn’t as much fun as I remember.”

There’s a Ramones song about this.
That kid is getting high on his own supply.
