I’ve worked with a guy who could do this for house paints. The hardware store we worked at sold A LOT of house paint. We had a few booklets of color swatches, the colors were made by following a given recipe/formula. After a while you tend to get a feel for what’s involved in making more common colors. There was a guy who’d worked at the store 20+ years who could more or less “freestyle” match paint using formulas he’d memorized. It wasn’t matching *any* paint but seeing it in real time was very impressive.
