Canadian sniper Francis Pegahmagabow had 378 confirmed kills in WWI, captured 300 Germans, and was the most decorated Native soldier in Canadian history. He’d crawl into No Man’s Land at night and wait for enemy soldiers, one of only 39 Canadians to earn two bars on his Military Medal.

    1. He was from the Ojibwe people of the Parry Island Band in Ontario, Canada. “First Nations” is the term used in Canada for the indigenous peoples.

Francis Pegahmagabow served nearly the entire First World War on the front lines and became the most effective sniper of the entire conflict, with 378 confirmed kills and 300 captured enemy soldiers.

He would slowly creep into No Man’s Land at night, one of the most dangerous tasks imaginable in trench warfare, and wait in position for German soldiers to arrive. He fought at the Somme, where he was wounded in the leg but recovered in time to rejoin his battalion in Belgium. During the Battle of the Somme, he served as a scout and messenger, carrying communications along the front lines with complete disregard for danger, earning him his first Distinguished Conduct Medal.

In August 1918 during the Battle of the Scarpe near Upton Wood, his company was almost out of ammunition and in danger of being surrounded by German forces. Pegahmagabow voluntarily went into No Man’s Land under heavy machine gun and rifle fire to retrieve more ammunition, allowing his post to hold and push back the German attack. For this action he received a second bar on his Military Medal, only 39 Canadians in the entire war earned that honor.

He survived the war and is recognized as one of Canada’s greatest soldiers and the most decorated First Nations combatant in Canadian military history.

One interesting detail: he was known to infiltrate enemy trenches at night and even cut souvenirs off sleeping German soldiers’ uniforms.
