1) Ireland is still around.
2) It’s nice to have an even playing field. We all talk English with each other even though it’s not our first language.
3) Actually, French and German are also official EU working languages. In theory, you can do anything official in these languages. But of course English is the main lingua Franca, and not just in Europe but globally.
The UK and US don’t own English. It’s not like we’d need to pay them licensing fees. I’d prefer Esperanto to have become the world language through global cooperation rather than English because the Brits had the largest empire and later the Americans the strongest army. But it is what it is. Let’s own English.
EDIT: To clarify, as someone correctly pointed out, the EU has many official languages. You can address the European Parliament in Lithuanian or Portuguese, you can read any regulation in Danish or Slovenian. However, only English, French and German are also working languages of the European Commission. You can’t work at a European institution other than the Parliament and expect to handle your daily work in Latvian or Greek. In practice, it’s mostly English of course.

Gotta be Portuguese, German or French.
I’d hate to have to learn German or French because nobody likes the french and german is just so god damn difficult, but they are the most accessible languages for the EU.
That or scottish english because that would just be funny.

Take English away from UK and US. We now have our own eurocentric English with its own grammar, a new English (EU) option in language pickers.
And now we can all call ourselves “native speakers” without having to diminish ourselves when compared to UK or US speakers. Same as Aussies, Kiwis, Irish etc. do

If only there was a precedent for a common language used by Europe as de facto lingua franca and taught to the majority of the educated class and used commonly as the language of law and scholarly work…
I will say, as impractical as it sounds, using Latin would be instant +50 from aura farming.

The best options are Esperanto (difficult to implement) or Interlingua (I consider the best option if we take into account the number of people who speak Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian
