Sakaguchi Sōunsai, a native of Osaka, was a leading disciple of Tanabe Chikuunsai I. In 1929, he was among the first bamboo artists to exhibit at the government-sponsored 10th Imperiat Art Academy Exhibition (Teiten). This unusual work uses arrow shafts made from stiff bamboo (yadake) to create the structure of the box, generating a pattern reminiscent of archaic oracle bone script.]
