Historical urban legend, nobody knows if this really happened, but I hope it’s true.

Apparently it was a controversial decision to make Grant supreme commander of the Union forces. An advisor told President Lincoln “but sir, he’s a drunk!”

Lincoln responded with a question, “what’s his preferred drink?”

      “Whiskey”

To which Lincoln shouted “well get him more!”

It’s all fun and games to talk about the war (2 forefathers who fought for the Union, Cavalry Officer on the Swiss side of the family), but holy shit did the Union fuck up Reconstruction

IMO Grant is underrated due to decades (if not a century) of confederate and lost cause propaganda trying to put Lee on a pedestal..but he revolutionized US war doctrine as everyone before was still using focused on using Napoleonic tactics

    6. Does anybody else feel like we should take the “S” out of his name.

      Ulysses Grant sounds cooler

Best General ever. He’s so great that Lincoln even thought he was a threat to his 2nd Presidenial campaign in 1864. But once Grant confirmed his allegiance to Lincoln, he was instantly booted up to Lieutenant General.

    8. Claiming Grant is the greatest general of all time is kind of like claiming your undefeated high school basketball coach was the best basketball coach of all time. It’s possible: maybe their strategy and the leadership skills were literally unmatched. Certainly they excelled in the field in which they competed. But they were never really challenged at an appropriate level to make the claim they are the goat.

Grant’s greatest achievements are like crossing a river really fast and putting a bunch of materially disadvantaged Confederates in their place. He did that really well, but how do you compare that against people who fought the strongest armies in the world and won?

    9. Helmuth von Moltke the elder was a general at the same time as Grant, and commanded an army to war a year after the American civil war ended. He masterminded the crushing of the Austrian empire and pulled it off in 7 weeks, a defeat so total that it almost caused the empire to disintegrate and needed Russian invasion to restore Vienna’s control, leading to the compromise of 1867 and formation of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary. He then followed it up by defeating the then most powerful army in Europe in under 4 months.

      I don’t even think it’s close

    10. So, I would go out on a limb and put Grant and Clausewitz as absolute GOATS.

Grant for his absolute dismantling of Lee’s army during the Overland Campaign and his Vicksburg victory.

Clausewitz for his contributions in military strategy and Waterloo. Vom Kriege is great and his contributions to realpolitik are pretty dope.
